About Hope Hospital

Some hospitals are built for business. Hope Children’s was built out of necessity — and out of love

FOUNDER'S STORY

Built out of necessity.
Built out of love.

Dr. Anthonia Shagaya trained in the United States in General Paediatrics, with a subspecialty in Paediatric Infectious Diseases. When she returned to Nigeria and began practising, she encountered the same scene again and again: parents leaving consultations confused, overwhelmed, and unsure what was wrong with their child, what the medication was for, or what to do next. They had been seen. But they had not been heard.

She also noticed something missing entirely: structured well-child care. The preventative visits, the developmental checks, the nutritional guidance, the proactive framework that does not just help children recover from illness — but helps them grow and thrive. In the environments she worked in, this was not routine. It was a gap she could not ignore.

When care is intentional, it changes lives

Early in her Nigerian practice, Dr. Shagaya began caring for children living with sickle cell disease. What she observed changed her. When these children received consistent, structured, proactive care — when someone was paying deliberate attention — they had fewer crises. Complications were caught earlier. Outcomes improved significantly.

Care, when it is intentional and continuous, does not just help. It changes the trajectory of a life.

This led her to establish a sickle cell clinic, and later a foundation to support individuals and families living with the condition. The lesson was simple and permanent: structure saves lives.

The personal why

Then came the moment that made everything personal. Multiple members of Dr. Shagaya's own family experienced premature births. In those fragile, terrifying days — when a newborn's life hangs in the balance — access to skilled neonatology made all the difference. Her family had that access. She knew most families in Abuja did not. That discrepancy sat with her quietly for years. Until she decided to do something about it.

Hope Children's is the answer

Hope Children's & Neonatal Hospital is the answer to everything she saw, experienced, and refused to accept. It is a place where care is not rushed. Where parents are heard. Where children receive the highest standard of evidence-based care. Where families feel supported at every step — not just during a crisis, but through every milestone, every worry, every ordinary Tuesday morning when something does not feel right.

Our Values

What we believe

Our values are not a list on a wall. They are the standard by which every clinical decision, every conversation, and every consultation at Hope Children’s is made.

Clinical Excellence

We practise evidence-based medicine without exception. Every protocol, every decision, every interaction is held to the highest clinical standard. For us, excellence is a non-negotiable operating principle, not an aspiration.

Continuity of Care

We believe that healing happens in relationships. We build long-term bonds with families — whether it is a single doctor who knows your child's history, a team that remembers your name, or a practice that grows with your family across years, not visits.

Emotional Safety & Trust

Parents should feel as safe as their children here. You are free to ask any question, voice any fear, and leave every consultation feeling more informed and more confident than when you arrived. We hold space for the whole family.

Parent Partnership

We do not tell parents what to do. We walk alongside them. Every parent is a partner in their child's care — not a passive recipient of instructions. We explain. We listen. We decide together.

Intentional Structure

We believe that structured, proactive care changes outcomes. From well-child visits to our sickle cell programme, we build preventive systems around children's health — not just responses to illness.

Warmth & Compassion

Premium care and genuine warmth are not in conflict. We are clinically rigorous and deeply human. The environment, the communication, the consultation — all of it should feel both excellent and kind.

A Nigeria where no child goes without the care they deserve.

“When care is intentional, continuous, and well-structured, it changes lives.”

Our Vision

To build a trusted, family-centred children’s and neonatal healthcare institution where every child receives safe, exceptional care — and every family feels supported, understood, and hopeful throughout their health journey.

Our Mission

We provide compassionate, evidence-based paediatric and newborn care in a calm, unhurried environment where families feel at home. We are committed to partnering with parents — offering not just treatment, but guidance, reassurance, and continuity of care — so that every child receives the best possible start in life.
