Patient-focused care delivered with compassion and innovation
Newborn Care
The first days of your baby's life are the most precious — and sometimes the most frightening.
At Hope Children’s, we are here to make sure your newborn is seen, assessed, and supported from the very beginning.
What To Expect
- Comprehensive newborn examination within 24–48 hours of birth
- Weight, growth, and feeding assessment
- Jaundice screening and monitoring
- Hearing and developmental screening
- Guidance on breastfeeding, formula feeding, and infant nutrition
- Vitamin K and newborn immunisations
- Personalised care plan for your baby's first weeks
When To Come In
If your baby is feeding poorly, has a persistent fever, appears unusually yellow, or something simply does not feel right — come in. You do not need a referral. We would rather see your baby and reassure you than have you worry at home.
A Note For New Parents
There is no question too small. There is no worry too minor. You have just brought a new life into the world, and you deserve a doctor who will sit with you, explain everything, and still answer your WhatsApp message at 3pm when you get home. That is what we are here for.
Well-Child Visits
A well-child visit is not just a check-up. It is the foundation of your child's lifelong health.
At Hope Children’s, our well-child programme is structured around the key developmental milestones of childhood — so we are tracking your child’s growth, development, and wellbeing at every stage, not just responding when something goes wrong.
A well-child visit is not just a check-up. It is the foundation of your child's lifelong health.

You will always know what is happening with your child, what the treatment is for, and what to watch for next.
Immunisations
Vaccination is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect your child from serious illness.
At Hope Children’s, we administer the full childhood immunisation schedule — with clear explanations at every step, and proactive reminders so nothing is ever missed.
Our immunisation programme includes
- National Programme on Immunisation (NPI) schedule in full
- International extended schedule — including vaccines not routinely offered
- Catch-up vaccination planning for children who have missed doses
- Travel vaccines for families relocating or travelling internationally
- Influenza vaccine — annual administration for children and families
We Will Remind You
When your child is due for their next vaccination, we will reach out proactively via WhatsApp or phone. You should never have to remember the schedule — that is our job.
How it works at Hope Children's
Every vaccination visit includes a pre-vaccine assessment to ensure your child is well enough to receive immunisations. We explain what each vaccine does, what to expect afterward, and how to manage any common reactions. You will receive a written vaccination record at every visit.
Sickle Cell Clinic
Hope Children's has a dedicated, structured sickle cell programme.
Built on the conviction that children with sickle cell disease deserve consistent, proactive, specialist care. Not crisis management. Ongoing partnership.
What our sickle cell programme includes
- Comprehensive initial assessment and genotype confirmation
- Personalised care plan — tailored to your child's specific presentation
- Regular scheduled reviews, not just crisis visits
- Hydroxyurea therapy management where indicated
- Prophylactic medication and vaccination management
- Pain crisis protocols and guidance for parents
- Nutritional assessment and supplementation
- Transition planning for adolescent patients
- Parent education — understanding the condition, managing daily life
A programme built around the whole family
We understand that managing sickle cell disease in a child affects the entire family. Our approach includes the parents as full partners in care. We explain every decision. We provide written care plans. And we are available for your questions — not just at the clinic visit.
"When care is intentional, continuous, and proactive, it does not just help a child with sickle cell disease. It changes the trajectory of their entire life."
— Dr. Anthonia Shagaya
Feeding & Nutrition
Nutrition in early childhood does not just fuel growth — it shapes development, immunity, cognition, and lifelong health.
At Hope Children’s, feeding and nutrition guidance is not an afterthought. It is a core part of how we care for your child.
We can help with
- Breastfeeding support — latch, supply, positioning, and troubleshooting
- Formula feeding guidance — type, volume, and preparation
- Introduction of solid foods — timing, textures, and food groups
- Nutritional assessment — ensuring your child is getting everything they need
- Picky eating and food refusal — practical, non-anxious strategies
- Failure to thrive — assessment and management
- Iron-deficiency anaemia and nutritional deficiencies
- Feeding difficulties in children with developmental conditions
- Obesity and weight management — supportive, non-stigmatising approach
A note on breastfeeding
We are strong advocates for breastfeeding wherever it is possible and sustainable for the mother. But we also know that breastfeeding is not always straightforward, and that formula feeding is sometimes the right choice. Whatever path you choose, we will support you — without judgment, and with evidence-based guidance.
Urgent Care
When your child is unwell and cannot wait for a routine appointment, Hope Children's is here.
Our urgent care service is designed for children who need to be seen the same day — with the same thoroughness and attention as any other consultation.
When to use urgent care
- High fever — especially in children under 3 months, or any fever above 39.5°C
- Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
- Severe vomiting or diarrhoea — especially with signs of dehydration
- Rashes that are spreading quickly or accompanied by fever
- Ear pain, eye discharge, or signs of infection
- Injuries — cuts, falls, or suspected fractures
- Allergic reactions — hives, swelling, or any breathing difficulty
- Any situation where your instinct says: my child needs to be seen today
Emergency Note
If your child is having difficulty breathing, has lost consciousness, is having a seizure, or you believe they are in immediate danger — call emergency services (112) or go directly to the nearest emergency room. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, call us directly or come in. We will see your child the same day.
Neurodevelopmental Assessment
Every Child Develops Differently. Understanding Their Journey Starts Here.
Every child develops at their own pace. Some begin talking early, others take their first steps later, and many reach milestones in their own time. However, when development seems consistently delayed or something simply doesn’t feel right, an early assessment can provide clarity and reassurance.
At Hope Children’s & Neonatal Hospital, our Neurodevelopmental Assessment service is designed to evaluate your child’s growth, learning, communication, movement, and behaviour in a supportive, family-centred environment. Our goal is to understand your child’s unique developmental needs and guide you on the next best steps.
When Should You Consider an Assessment?
A neurodevelopmental assessment may be helpful if your child:
- Is not meeting expected developmental milestones
- Has delayed speech or language development
- Experiences difficulty with movement or coordination
- Has challenges with learning or attention
- Shows behavioural or social difficulties
- Has concerns raised by a teacher, caregiver, or healthcare professional
- Was born prematurely or has a medical history that may affect development
Areas We Assess
Every child is unique, and every assessment is guided by their age, developmental stage, and individual needs.
Depending on your child’s presentation, the assessment may consider:
- Growth and developmental milestones
- Speech and language development
- Motor skills and coordination
- Learning and cognitive development
- Social interaction and communication
- Behaviour and emotional wellbeing
- Attention and concentration
- Medical and developmental history
- Parent and caregiver observations
Why Early Assessment Matters
A child’s brain develops rapidly during the first few years of life. Identifying developmental concerns early gives families the opportunity to better understand their child’s needs and access appropriate support where necessary.
Early assessment is not about placing labels on children. It is about recognising strengths, identifying areas where additional support may help, and ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Common Reasons Families Seek an Assessment
Parents may request a neurodevelopmental assessment for concerns including:
- Delayed speech
- Developmental delay
- Autism-related concerns
- Attention and concentration difficulties
- Learning challenges
- Behavioural concerns
- Motor development difficulties
- Follow-up after premature birth
Not every concern results in a diagnosis, but every concern deserves careful evaluation.
Book a Neurodevelopmental Assessment
If you have concerns about your child’s development, don’t wait for those concerns to become bigger questions.
Early assessment can provide clarity, reassurance, and guidance when it matters most.
Parent Support
Parenting is one of the hardest things a human being can do.
At Hope Children’s, we do not just care for children — we care for the families around them. Our parent support services are designed to give you the knowledge, confidence, and reassurance you need to be the best possible advocate for your child.
What parent support looks like at Hope Children's
- Every consultation ends with a written summary — in plain language — of what was discussed, what was decided, and what to watch for
- WhatsApp access for follow-up questions between visits — because questions do not always wait for appointments
- Parent education sessions — on topics including newborn care, fever management, nutrition, and child development
- The Hope Children's Parent Circle — a moderated community for registered families, with monthly Q&A sessions with Dr. Shagaya
- Guidance on navigating the Nigerian healthcare system — referrals, specialists, and what to ask
- Emotional support — we hold space for the anxiety, the uncertainty, and the exhaustion that comes with parenthood
"We do not tell parents what to do. We walk alongside them. You are an expert in your child. We are experts in medicine. Together, we make the best decisions for the person who matters most."
— Dr. Anthonia Shagaya

Physiotherapy
Helping Children Move, Grow, and Thrive
Movement is an important part of childhood. From rolling over and taking first steps to running, playing, and participating in everyday activities, physical development plays a vital role in a child’s health, confidence, and independence.
At Hope Children’s & Neonatal Hospital, our Physiotherapy service supports children who may be experiencing difficulties with movement, strength, coordination, posture, or physical development. Whether your child is recovering from an injury, managing a medical condition, or simply needs support to reach important developmental milestones, we are here to help.
Our goal is to help every child achieve the highest level of physical function possible for their age and stage of development.
When Might a Child Benefit from Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy may be helpful if your child:
- Is delayed in reaching motor milestones
- Has difficulty sitting, crawling, standing, or walking
- Experiences muscle weakness or poor coordination
- Has challenges with balance or movement
- Has a condition affecting physical development
- Is recovering from an injury or illness
- Has been referred by a paediatrician or other healthcare professional
- Requires support to improve mobility and physical function
Sometimes, physiotherapy is recommended as part of a broader developmental care plan. In other cases, parents simply want to better understand how to support their child’s physical development.
Areas We Commonly Support
Our physiotherapy service may be beneficial for children experiencing:
- Developmental delays
- Motor skill difficulties
- Muscle weakness
- Balance and coordination challenges
- Physical limitations following illness or injury
- Mobility concerns
- Postural concerns
- Conditions affecting movement and physical function
Every child is different, and support is tailored to their individual needs.
What to Expect
A physiotherapy appointment begins with understanding your child’s medical history, developmental journey, and current challenges.
The physiotherapist will assess your child’s movement, strength, mobility, and physical abilities before discussing appropriate recommendations and goals.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate throughout the process, as supporting a child’s progress often extends beyond the clinic and into everyday life.
Why Early Intervention Matters
Children’s bodies are constantly growing and adapting. Addressing physical challenges early can help improve movement, build confidence, encourage independence, and support participation in daily activities.
Early intervention may also help prevent small difficulties from becoming larger challenges over time.
The earlier concerns are identified, the greater the opportunity to support healthy development.

Together, we can better understand your child’s needs and identify the most appropriate path forward.
Early Intervention Services
The Earlier We Act, The Greater the Opportunity to Grow
The early years of a child’s life are a period of remarkable growth and development. During this time, the brain is building the foundations for learning, communication, movement, and social interaction.
When developmental concerns are recognised early, timely support can help children build important skills, overcome challenges, and reach their full potential.
At Hope Children’s & Neonatal Hospital, our Early Intervention Services are designed to provide children and their families with guidance, support, and appropriate care during these critical developmental years. Our approach focuses on understanding each child’s unique needs and helping families navigate the next steps with confidence.
What Is Early Intervention?
Early intervention refers to the support and care provided to infants and young children who may be experiencing developmental delays or who are at risk of developmental challenges.
Rather than waiting to see if a child “catches up,” early intervention encourages timely assessment, appropriate monitoring, and evidence-based support during the years when children learn and develop most rapidly.
The goal is simple: to give every child the best possible opportunity to thrive.
Who May Benefit?
Early Intervention Services may be appropriate for children who:
- Are not meeting expected developmental milestones
- Have delayed speech or language development
- Experience challenges with movement or coordination
- Have difficulties with learning, attention, or behaviour
- Were born prematurely
- Have experienced medical conditions that may affect development
- Have concerns identified by parents, teachers, or healthcare professionals
- Would benefit from ongoing developmental monitoring
Sometimes, the first sign is simply a parent’s feeling that something isn’t quite right. Early support begins with listening to those concerns.
Our Approach
Every child develops differently, which is why no two care plans are exactly the same.
Our approach begins with understanding your child’s developmental history, current abilities, and individual needs. Following assessment, families receive guidance and recommendations that support their child’s development and help them make informed decisions about the next steps.
We believe parents and caregivers are essential partners in every child’s developmental journey.
Why Early Intervention Matters
Research consistently shows that children benefit most when developmental concerns are recognised and addressed as early as possible.
Early intervention can help children:
- Build confidence and independence
- Strengthen communication and learning skills
- Improve physical, social, and emotional development
- Develop important everyday life skills
- Reach developmental milestones with appropriate support
Small steps taken early can make a meaningful difference over time.
Supporting Families Every Step of the Way

Our role is not only to care for your child but also to provide clear guidance, answer your questions, and help you understand your child’s developmental journey. We work with families to ensure they feel informed, supported, and confident throughout the process.
